History: I bought a 20-year-old 4MP Olympus C-770. Olympus was always known for its good Image Quality and great Colors.

From photography to videography

 Last Update:- 21st April 2024

If you studied my 6-part series on Creative Photography and Color or my various articles about image sensors, you will appreciate this journey on videography. I was looking forward to starting sooner, but the need for information on digital cameras and exposure techniques was more urgent.

Here is a brief summary of the subjects I am discussing on this blog:-

  • Olympus cameras and working with color and the different creative features
  • Several articles about marketing, social media, and consumer communications
  • Image sensors, the digital camera, various exposure techniques & image quality
  • Olympus (OMS) WorkSpace and the benefits of using the Enhanced Raw Format
  • I created a "Map of this Blog." It will help you to find more info about my articles.

Folks, my progress on video didn't kick off as expected. My general projects and writing took more time than expected. I am planning to spend more time on video and small video projects in 2024.

The next journey is learning more about videography

My videography journey started with the Olympus EM5 II and the MyOlympusOMD blog. Video projects are not new to me as I am familiar with editing software like FinalCut Pro and how to create videos with my EM5 II. The switch from old VHS videos to digital is new for most older photographers.

One of the main challenges is the differences between digital videography and photography. The norm is to treat them as one topic when discussing photography. A good example is auto-focussing. Many don't use CAF, whereas most hobby videographers are more prone to use CAF.

You're welcome to follow my notice board entrees.

This journey will consist of practical examples and a series of how-to articles. Those interested in being part of this journey will get an opportunity to learn the basics of videography and M43 cameras. I plan to use this page as my noticeboard and meeting place. The small view count and no comments make me think M43 photographers are not interested...

This is the primary program I am planning:-

  • A basic introduction to videography and what technical terms and info you need to know
  • Camera settings, video file formats, and the basic stuff you will need to start with videos
  • A basic overview of video editing and software options for those who haven't done this
  • Everything like microphones, preparation, scripting, color grading, editing, and more...
  • Video recording techniques, camera movements, how-to create special effects, and more...
  • We will discover more advanced subjects like Log profiles and what you need to know...

We will discuss short documentaries, family videos, YouTube, and storytelling. This is an opportunity if you have never created videos with Olympus cameras. I appreciate the difficulty of starting and how basics like file format, organizing video clips, and editing videos were for me.

See the short documentary of the Swiss Vespa Tour I created in 2016. The tour happened over 5 days, and I used my EM5 II with the 12-50mm EZ lens to record the event. I used my 12-40mm f2.8 lens for those recordings in poor light. I prepared the video in Adobe Premiere Elements.

Below is the basic M43 equipment you could consider:-

Most Olympus M43 cameras with the video option are OK. See the basics list below:-

  • OMD cameras - EM10 II & III, EM5 II, Pen F, EM1 II, or newer models
  • Many of the older Pen, OMD, or compact cameras are perfect for video
  • Panasonic has many compacts and M43 cameras that will do great video

Any of the M43 kit lenses are perfect for video. You do not need to purchase any specialized lenses for video projects. I will be using these lenses:-

  • Different kit lenses and f1.8 compact lenses
  • Zuiko 14-42mm and 12-50mm f3.5 - 6.3 EZ
  • Older Olympus OM lenses with adapters

What else do you need?

  • Get yourself a variable ND filter (it doesn't need to be an expensive ND filter).
  • It's OK if your camera does not have a Mic input - you can use a mobile phone.
  • Your current memory card should be OK - we will study various memory cards.
  • You do not need a 4K camera - Most people use 1080p for the web and television.
  • You do not need camera cages, gimbals, or LED lights to start your video journey.

What video editing software do you need?

  • Da Vinci Resolve - it's free and a good video editing option (compatible with Log-400)
  • Final Cut Pro - Apple Video Editing software and what I am currently using
  • Adobe Premiere Elements - it's great for most video editing purposes
  • Apple iMovie - Similar to Abobe Premiere Elements

It will become clear what additional video equipment you need as you are more experienced in creating videos. The secret is to start small and improve your knowledge with your existing gear.
